Decades after French nuclear tests, a gigantic creature named Godzilla emerges from the Pacific and attacks New York City. Biologist Dr. Niko Tatopoulos discovers Godzilla is asexual and has laid hundreds of eggs within Madison Square Garden. Nick, his ex-girlfriend Audrey, her cameraman Animal, and French agent Phillip Raymond infiltrate the Garden to destroy the rapidly hatching offspring, alerting the military to bomb the nest. Godzilla pursues them to the Brooklyn Bridge, where military jets kill the creature, but a single surviving egg hints at future threats.
