1952
Private Prewitt, a skilled bugler, transfers to Hawaii and refuses to box for Captain Holmes, enduring relentless harassment while his friend Maggio suffers and dies in the stockade. Prewitt avenges Maggio by killing Sergeant Judson, becoming a fugitive as Captain Holmes is forced to resign and First Sergeant Warden begins an affair with Holmes's wife, Karen. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Prewitt is tragically shot and killed by military police while attempting to rejoin his company, mistaken for an enemy. Warden identifies Prewitt's body and ensures his burial, while Karen and Lorene, Prewitt's love, depart Hawaii on the same ship, reflecting on their lost loves.
