Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz feels overshadowed by his more successful brother, Dave, and struggles financially until he receives an invitation from eccentric millionaire John du Pont to join and coach his Foxcatcher wrestling team. Mark moves to the lavish Foxcatcher estate, where du Pont, seeking validation and a surrogate family, attempts to mentor him, but their relationship becomes increasingly volatile due to du Pont's erratic behavior, drug use, and need for control. Du Pont eventually convinces Dave to move his family to Foxcatcher to coach the team, further fueling Mark's resentment and the complex power dynamics within the estate. After Mark leaves Foxcatcher following a disappointing Olympic performance, du Pont's mental state deteriorates further, exacerbated by his mother's death and a growing paranoia.
