In 1820s Oregon, Otis 'Cookie' Figowitz, a quiet cook for fur trappers, encounters King-Lu, a Chinese fugitive, and they quickly form a bond, dreaming of a better life beyond their meager circumstances. They hatch a plan to steal milk from the Chief Factor's prized cow, the only one in the territory, to bake and sell 'oily cakes' at the local market, which become an instant success. Their illicit business thrives, earning them enough money to consider buying land, but their repeated nighttime excursions to milk the cow eventually draw suspicion. During one such attempt, they are discovered, leading to a frantic chase through the woods where King-Lu falls from a tree and Cookie is separated from him, later found injured by an elderly couple.
