FIELD OF DREAMS script

Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella builds a baseball field in his cornfield after a mysterious voice instructs him, drawing the ghosts of legendary players and the ire of his brother-in-law. Further instructions lead Ray to recruit reclusive author Terence Mann and the spectral form of Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, bringing them all back to the magical field. When Ray's daughter is injured, the older Doc Graham steps off the field to save her, becoming mortal before departing, and Shoeless Joe invites Terence Mann to join the ghost players. Finally, Ray encounters a young man on the field who is revealed to be his own deceased father, allowing them to reconcile and play catch.

Dialogue examples

I was the East Coast distributor of 'involved.'. I ate it, drank it, and breathed it. Then they killed Martin. They killed Bobby. And then they elected Tricky Dick. Twice. And now, people like you think I must be miserable that I'm not involved anymore. Well, I've got news for you: I spent all my misery years ago. I have no more pain for any of you. I gave at the office.

Terence Mann / Scene 41

The man wrote the best books of his generation, he was a pioneer in the civil rights and anti-war movements, he made the cover of Newsweek, he knew everybody, he did everyting...he helped shape his time. He hung out with the Beatles! But in the end, it wasn't enough. What he missed ...was baseball.

Ray Kinsella / Scene 21

I never got to bat in the major leagues. I'd have liked the chance -- just once -- to stare down a big league pitcher. Stare him down and then just as he goes into the windup -- wink! Make him wonder if I know something he doesn't. That's what I wish for.

Archibald Graham / Scene 49

Ray. I asked the bank if we could miss a payment or two, and they told me they'd just sold the note on the farm to Mark and his partners. So they own the paper now, and he says if we don't sell to them, they'll foreclose. Ray, we don't have the money.

Annie Kinsella / Scene 50

Hi, I just wanted to thank you folks for putting up the field and letting us play here. I'm John Kinsella.

John Kinsella / Scene 63

My name is Ray Kinsella. You used my father's name for a character in one of your stories. John Kinsella.

Ray Kinsella / Scene 35

You build a baseball field in the middle of nowhere, you sit around here and stare at nothing ---

Mark / Scene 60

He has his whole life in front of him, and I'm not even a glint in his eye. What do I say to him?

Ray Kinsella / Scene 63
