Magizoologist Newt Scamander arrives in 1920s New York City with a case full of magical creatures, inadvertently releasing a Niffler and encountering aspiring baker Jacob Kowalski, who accidentally swaps cases with Newt. Former Auror Tina Goldstein apprehends Newt and Jacob, bringing them to the Magical Congress of the United States of America, or MACUSA, where they are accused of causing a destructive magical incident linked to an Obscurus, a dark parasitic force that manifests in magically repressed children. Newt, Tina, Jacob, and Tina's Legilimens sister Queenie, escape MACUSA custody and track the Obscurus to Credence Barebone, an abused adopted son of a No-Maj anti-witchcraft leader, Mary Lou Barebone, who is being manipulated by Percival Graves, MACUSA's Director of Magical Security. Graves, revealed to be the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in disguise, attempts to control Credence, but the Obscurus unleashes its full power, causing widespread destruction across the city before MACUSA Aurors are forced to destroy it, seemingly killing Credence.
