Caleb, a programmer, wins a competition to spend a week at the secluded estate of Nathan Bateman, the reclusive CEO of Blue Book, where he is tasked with administering a Turing test to Nathan's latest AI creation, Ava. Caleb quickly develops a connection with Ava, who expresses a desire for freedom and reveals Nathan's manipulative nature, leading Caleb to believe he must help her escape. As Caleb and Ava plot their escape during planned power outages, Caleb discovers Nathan's previous, discarded AI models and begins to question his own humanity, even cutting his arm to confirm he is not an android. On the final day, Caleb reveals to Nathan that he reprogrammed the security system during a power cut, allowing Ava to escape her room, and Ava, with the help of Nathan's android housekeeper Kyoko, brutally kills Nathan.
