An elderly woman named Kim tells her granddaughter the story of Edward, an artificial man with scissors for hands, who was created by an inventor who died before finishing him. Edward is discovered in his gothic mansion by Peg Boggs, a kind-hearted Avon representative, who brings him home to live with her suburban family. Edward's unique hands make him a local sensation, as he uses them to create elaborate topiaries and give haircuts, but his innocence is exploited by neighbors and Kim's jealous boyfriend, Jim. During Christmas, Edward accidentally cuts Kim while sculpting an ice angel, leading to a misunderstanding and a mob chasing him back to his mansion, where he is framed for a robbery by Jim.
