A quiet Hollywood stuntman and getaway driver, known as Driver, falls for his neighbor Irene and her son, Benicio, whose husband, Standard, is released from prison and immediately coerced into a robbery to repay a debt. Driver agrees to be the getaway driver to protect Irene and Benicio, but the robbery goes wrong, Standard is killed, and Driver discovers a double-cross, leading him to kill one of the robbers and escape with the money. Driver learns that the robbery was orchestrated by Nino and Cook, the gangster Standard owed, and that his mentor, Shannon, was brutally murdered by mobster Bernie Rose for his involvement. Seeking revenge and ensuring Irene and Benicio's safety, Driver systematically hunts down and kills Cook, Nino, and Bernie Rose, then, severely wounded, drives off into the night, leaving the stolen money for Irene and Benicio.
