Easy Rawlins, a veteran, is hired to find Daphne Monet, leading him into a web of murder and blackmail involving mayoral candidate Matthew Teran. As Easy investigates, he discovers Daphne is being blackmailed with compromising photos and a dead man is found, making him a suspect. With his friend Mouse, Easy uncovers that Daphne is actually Ruby, involved in a scandal with Teran, and she admits to killing Coretta before Albright arrives for the photos.
