Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, falls in love with Vanessa Carlysle, but their romance is cut short when Wade is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Desperate for a cure, Wade undergoes an experimental procedure offered by a mysterious recruiter, which transforms him into a disfigured but immortal mutant named Deadpool. Seeking revenge and a way to restore his appearance, Deadpool hunts down Francis Freeman, also known as Ajax, the sadistic mutant responsible for his transformation. Ajax kidnaps Vanessa, forcing Deadpool to team up with X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead to rescue her from a scrapyard showdown. Deadpool ultimately kills Ajax, saving Vanessa and accepting his new identity as a hero, albeit a very unconventional one.
