Dead Poets Society script

New English teacher John Keating inspires Welton Academy students, including Todd Anderson and Neil Perry, to embrace individualism and revive the Dead Poets Society. Neil defies his father to pursue acting, while other boys challenge norms, but their rebellion escalates when Neil's father discovers his disobedience, leading to Neil's tragic suicide. The administration investigates, and a betrayal by Richard Cameron results in expulsions and a document implicating Keating in Neil's death, forcing his dismissal. As Mr. Nolan takes over, Todd and many other students stand on their desks, proclaiming "O Captain! My Captain!" in a final act of defiance and respect for Keating as he leaves.

Dialogue examples

I have here a detailed description of what occurred at your meetings. It describes how your teacher, Mr. Keating, encouraged you boys to organize this club and to use it as a source of inspiration for reckless and self-indulgent behavior. It describes how Mr. Keating, both in and out of the classroom, encouraged Neil Perry to follow his obsession with acting when he knew all along it was against the explicit order of Neil's parents. It was Mr. Keating's blatant abuse of his position as teacher that led directly to Neil Perry's death.

Mr. Nolan / Scene 26
