Letty, a highly organized teacher with OCD and anxiety, experiences a public breakdown at a grocery store while searching for specific olives for her sister's engagement party, leading to her admission to Hillview Psychiatric Hospital. There, she meets Michael, a charming schizophrenic patient who performs magic tricks, and despite her initial resistance, they develop a romantic connection. Letty breaks off her engagement to her boyfriend, Paul, and pursues a relationship with Michael after both are released from the hospital. As they attempt to build a life together, Michael struggles to find employment due to his mental illness and secretly stops taking his medication, leading to a severe psychotic break during which he destroys his apartment. Heartbroken, Letty ends their relationship and returns to teaching, finding a new sense of peace and using Michael's magic tricks to connect with her students, while Michael returns to the hospital for further treatment.
