Defying his family's music ban, Miguel Rivera is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead on Día de los Muertos after stealing his idol Ernesto de la Cruz's guitar, needing a family blessing to return before sunrise. He seeks de la Cruz's blessing but is aided by Héctor, a forgotten soul who reveals de la Cruz murdered him and stole his music, making Héctor Miguel's true great-great-grandfather. With his deceased family's help, Miguel exposes de la Cruz's treachery and retrieves Héctor's photo, ensuring his memory endures in the Land of the Dead. Returning home, Miguel sings to his great-grandmother Mamá Coco, helping her remember Héctor and finally reuniting their family through music.
