Child services social worker Emily Jennings takes on the case of ten-year-old Lucy Sheridan, whose parents, Edward and Margaret, are suspected of abusing her. After Emily and Detective Mike Barron rescue Lucy from her parents' attempt to burn her alive in an oven, Emily takes temporary custody of Lucy. Soon after, Emily's other cases begin to unravel, with a boy named Diego killing his parents and her friend and psychologist Doug Winters dying from a mysterious hornet attack. Emily discovers that Lucy is a demon who feeds on fear and is responsible for the deaths, prompting Emily to attempt to kill Lucy by setting her house on fire and driving her car into a reservoir.
