BLAST FROM THE PAST script

In 1962, eccentric inventor Calvin Webber, convinced of an impending nuclear attack, moves his pregnant wife, Helen, into a luxurious fallout shelter beneath their suburban home, where their son, Adam, is born and raised in complete isolation for thirty-five years. In 1997, with supplies dwindling and the shelter's systems failing, the family believes the surface world is still a nuclear wasteland, prompting Adam to venture out to replenish their provisions and find a non-mutated wife. Adam, naive and socially awkward, encounters the modern world, mistaking a streetwalker for a wholesome woman and a porn shop for a general store, before meeting Eve Rustokov, a cynical but kind-hearted woman who initially dismisses him as a bizarre cult member. As Adam navigates Los Angeles with Eve's reluctant help, he uses his old-fashioned charm and extensive knowledge to acquire supplies and win over Eve, who eventually discovers his true origins and falls in love with him.

Dialogue examples

Shut up! All of these things... ask you to believe in a power greater than yourself! Some sort of God on High! Well...I have lifted my eyes skyward a time or two... and I have certainly not seen anything coming from up there except a goddamn airplane -- that I can't afford to get on!

Soda Jerk / Scene 33

They've done a lot of re-building but society, at least as we knew it, has utterly collapsed. People throw up in the streets. Others point guns. There's something terribly wrong with the automobiles and...and I...I can't tell you the rest. I just can't.

Calvin Webber / Scene 39

Then I'll need, twelve into nine hundred, seventy-five boxes. And that's almost...five hundred dollars just for the hamburger! And my Mom only gave me three thousand dollars for everything! The yacht batteries! The diesel oil! The birthday candles!

Adam Webber / Scene 51

Oh, Adam, that would be wonderful if you could find a girl. One who's not a mutant...and hopefully comes from Pasadena. Nothing against Valley girls, but in my day anyhow, the girls from Pasadena, I don't know...always just seemed a little nicer.

Helen Webber / Scene 42

You live in...Alaska. The only way in or out of your place is by plane and... you've definitely come down here for food and supplies and... to find a wife!

Eve Rustokov / Scene 69

Well, that's great then! Terrific...except...it just occurred to me. I don't know where I live! I'm lost! I don't know where home is! Would you excuse me?

Adam Webber / Scene 51

It's not a pretty sight. Some eat out of garbage cans. Others are...cover your ears, Son, and hum. I mean that literally and I mean right now!

Calvin Webber / Scene 39

I know it has been terrible. But it wasn't your fault. And now all the decay is over with and things are going to get better. You understand?

Adam Webber / Scene 45
