1987
New York City detective Nick Conklin and his partner Charlie Skloaris witness a Yakuza hitman named Kobo murder a businessman and a mobster, leading to Kobo's arrest. Nick and Charlie are tasked with escorting Kobo to Japan, but Kobo escapes at Narita Airport due to a clever deception, forcing the American detectives to join forces with the disgraced Japanese detective Ichiro Matsumoto. As they investigate, Nick and Ichiro uncover a deeper conspiracy involving Yakuza boss Sugai and Kobo, who is attempting to start a gang war by forging money, and Charlie is brutally murdered by Kobo during a stakeout. Nick, consumed by grief and a desire for revenge, defies orders and, with Ichiro's help, tracks Kobo to Sugai's compound, where they capture Kobo and expose his counterfeiting operation, leading to Sugai's punishment of Kobo.
