BIG EYES script

Margaret Ulbrich leaves her first husband with her daughter Jane, struggling to make ends meet as an artist in 1950s San Francisco. She meets and marries Walter Keane, a charismatic but manipulative artist who begins to claim credit for Margaret's distinctive paintings of big-eyed children, convincing her to maintain the lie for their commercial success. As the Keane art empire grows, Margaret is forced to paint in secret, becoming increasingly isolated and resentful of Walter's fame and abusive control. After years of living in the shadow of Walter's deception, Margaret finally flees to Hawaii with Jane and, inspired by her newfound faith, publicly reveals that she is the true artist. The ensuing legal battle culminates in a dramatic courtroom paint-off, where Margaret proves her authorship, exposing Walter's fraud and reclaiming her identity and artistic legacy.

Dialogue examples

It's the craziest thing. I started charging for the posters! First a nickel... then a dime. YES, Maggie! It's cuckoo! So it got me thinkin': Would you rather sell a $500 painting, or a million cheaply-reproduced posters?! See, folks don't care if it's a copy. They just want art that touches them!

Walter Keane / Scene 31

Luckily, my maiden name is Margaret Doris Hawkins! "M" is the 13th letter of the alphabet, "D" is 4, "H" 8! If you add up 1 and 3 in 13, that gives you 4, making 4 plus 4 plus 8 equals 16, then 1 plus 6 equals seven!

Margaret Ulbrich / Scene 37

Loosen up, Mom! You're impossible! You move me all the way to Hawaii. Then I actually make some friends, and all you do is complain about them. Maybe you need to make some.

Jane / Scene 63

What emotions?! It's synthetic hack work! Your masterpiece has an infinity of Keanes -- which just makes it an infinity of kitsch!

John Canaday / Scene 53

"Sales?" None with this crowd. These people are looky-loos! They can't afford the paintings. But we gave away a heap of posters!

Dee-Ann / Scene 30

No! Her mom's just going to Vegas for the weekend. I'm supposed to have her once a month, but I don't make her mom enforce it.

Walter Keane / Scene 35

Jane has nice friends. Sometimes I pick them up at the junior high, and we all get pizza. But she's busy... Are you hungry?

Margaret Ulbrich / Scene 39

I had a helluva night. Worked three or four clubs. Stumbled onto some hot gossip: Madame Chiang Kai-shek is coming to town!

Walter Keane / Scene 46
