Dave, a young man obsessed with Italian cycling, spends his days with friends Mike, Cyril, and Moocher, while his parents worry about his future. Dave pursues Katherine Maxwell, a college student dating the arrogant cyclist Rod Sommers, leading to a serenade and a confrontation with Rod's fraternity brothers. The university announces an expansion of the Little 500 race, inspiring Dave to train seriously, despite his father's disapproval and his friends' skepticism. After a fight with his father and a realization about his identity, Dave sheds his Italian persona and commits to rebuilding a bike for the Little 500.
