A corrupt New York City Police Lieutenant, addicted to drugs and gambling, navigates his chaotic life, balancing his police duties with his illicit activities as a bookie for his precinct. He struggles with mounting gambling debts to a dangerous mobster named Large, while also investigating the brutal rape of a nun. The Lieutenant becomes obsessed with the nun's case, particularly after she forgives her attackers, leading him to a profound, drug-induced religious experience. He eventually tracks down the two young men, Julio and Paolo, responsible for the rape, but instead of arresting them, he gives them money and tells them to leave town. Shortly after, while waiting in his car, the Lieutenant is ambushed and killed by Large, the mobster to whom he owed a significant debt.
