Arthur Bach Templemead, a perpetually drunk and irresponsible heir, faces disinheritance from his formidable mother, Vivienne, unless he marries the wealthy Susan Johnson. Arthur, however, falls for Naomi Snart, a witty walking tour guide, leading to a secret romance and a growing conflict with his family's expectations. His nanny and lifelong caretaker, Hobson, initially disapproves of Naomi but eventually encourages Arthur to follow his heart, even as Hobson's health declines. After Hobson's death, a grief-stricken Arthur spirals into deeper alcoholism, but a final message from Hobson inspires him to attend an AA meeting and pursue Naomi.
