Former mob boss Paul Vitti fakes a breakdown to secure release into the custody of his reluctant psychotherapist, Ben Sobel, whose life is subsequently disrupted. Vitti's genuine emotional distress and his reconnection with the mob world, including rivals Patty LoPresti and Lou Rigazzi, unwillingly draw Ben deeper into danger. Using a movie set as a cover, Vitti plans a gold heist, further endangering Ben and his family, especially when Ben's son becomes Vitti's driver. During the heist, Ben and Vitti experience simultaneous breakdowns but succeed in stealing the gold, forming an unlikely bond before Vitti seemingly embraces a new path.
