Chris Kyle, a Texas rodeo cowboy, enlists in the Navy SEALs after the 9/11 attacks, driven by a desire to protect his country and becoming a legendary sniper known as "The Legend" in Iraq. During his four tours, Chris struggles with the moral weight of his kills, the constant threat of the enemy sniper Mustafa, and the brutal tactics of The Butcher, while simultaneously trying to maintain his relationship with his wife, Taya, and their growing family back home. The war takes a heavy toll on Chris, leading to emotional detachment and difficulty reintegrating into civilian life, despite Taya's pleas for him to leave the military. After witnessing the deaths of close friends and facing his own mortality, Chris finally retires from the SEALs and finds a new purpose helping wounded veterans, but his life is tragically cut short when he is murdered by a veteran he was assisting.
