1992
Escaped convict Butch Haynes and his partner Jerry David Pugh kidnap eight-year-old Phillip Perry from his Jehovah's Witness family in Texas during Halloween. Texas Ranger Red Garnett, who has a past connection to Butch, leads the pursuit with criminologist Sally Gerber and a team in a mobile command center. Butch kills Jerry for threatening Phillip, and a bond forms between Butch and Phillip as they evade authorities, with Butch acting as a surrogate father figure. After a chaotic chase through a small town and a high-speed pursuit that disables the police's mobile command center, Butch and Phillip take refuge at a farmhouse.
