When astrophysicist Dr. Satnam Tsurutani discovers that solar flares are causing the Earth's core to heat up, science advisor Adrian Helmsley warns President Wilson of an impending global catastrophe, while struggling author Jackson Curtis takes his children on a camping trip to Yellowstone. As the Earth's crust begins to shift, causing massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, Jackson races to save his family, including his ex-wife Kate and her boyfriend Gordon, by securing passage on a private plane and later a massive Antonov cargo plane with Russian oligarch Yuri Karpov and his sons. The group narrowly escapes collapsing cities and a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption, eventually crash-landing in the Himalayas, where they discover secret arks built by world governments to save humanity, but only for the wealthy and powerful. After Adrian exposes the government's plan to the world, the arks open their gates to all survivors, but a malfunction with the American ark's loading gate threatens to sink the vessel, forcing Jackson and his son Noah to work together to fix it underwater.
